  1. I used to get a lot of flack as a young woman in the military. If I didn’t swear, ever, for instance — I was too prim. If I did swear, ever, I was “not a lady”. I used to like to mess BACK with them by saying I was TOO a lady…I was the one who “kneaded the bread”. Not that any of them ever followed the word origin to find out what the joke was, but they did shut up in confusion! So yes, words are cultural artifacts — each with a flavor to be savored, or spit out!
